The 3-4-5 rule checks that a deck corner is square: measure 3 units along one side and 4 units along the other, and the diagonal between those points should be exactly 5. It is a layout check, not a design style. Before the boards go down, the frame should also be checked for level, footing spacing and code details.
No. Deck boards laid on soil trap moisture, shift and settle unevenly. A durable deck needs a proper base, footings and a framed substructure with airflow underneath. If your yard has low or soft spots, the fix starts with site prep, not with the boards.
